Seek & Find: Will you visit J.Crew this Weekend?

Posted on 21:00 by gaurav kumar
This is the weekly "sale watch" post, to help each other find sale items at our various local J.Crew stores. ;)

If you are stopping by a J.Crew store this weekend to take advantage of using your Red Card, to see what's available in the Spring Sale, or to see some new Spring arrivals in person, maybe you might be willing to share that with us in this post. In particular, if you could share with us a few of the noteworthy items that are available, at what prices, and potential sizes the store is carrying (as well as the store location)- that would be fantastic!

Also, please let us know if your local store is carrying an additional percent off sale. Thanks in advance!!! :)

P.S. I noticed that many of you have already been reporting sale items (and in which stores) in other posts which by the way "thank you!" :) I really appreciate how helpful we are for each other!

Jenna Lyons' "My Stuff" In Vanity Fair

Posted on 21:15 by gaurav kumar
A big "thanks!" to Doug who not only shared but also scanned an article in the recent Vanity Fair magazine (page 64 in the May 2009 edition), which features J.Crew's Jenna Lyons.

When you click on the image above (or here), you can read more about Jenna's "favorite things" when it comes to beauty products, home, clothes, & inspirations.

Also, there is a brief intro that reads: "Jenna Lyons, J.Crew's creative director, has transformed the company's image by infusing preppy basics with retro glamour and fashion-forward design. She has also launched their granny-chic jewelry line and seasonal collections of limited-edition pieces."

Is it just me, or is there a lot "goin' on" with these two sentences in terms of descriptions (e.g. retro glamour and fashion forward)? And what does "granny-chic" really mean? ;)

What are your thoughts on the brief intro? Do you think it describes Jenna Lyon's contributions to J.Crew accurately? Also, what do you think of her selections as favorite things?

J.Crew Email: Say "I do" at J.Crew...

Posted on 21:05 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to Julie who shared with us an email J.Crew sent on Friday. (I didn't get this email either. So I really appreciate Julie sharing it with us. I wonder, how does one sign up to receive all emails?) ;)

The email lets us know that J.Crew will have some of their wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses available to preview at select J.Crew locations. (This news was also mentioned in a previous post, "J.Crew Wedding Trunk Show & More!"). To view which stores might carry select pieces pertaining to the wedding collection, go to the "Store Locator" page (click here), where there is a new category in the key called "wedding collection preview".

Calling All San Francisco, CA Area JCAs!

Posted on 21:00 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to Ms. Mer (please check out her great blog here!) who has shared with us some great news! She has set up an event for JCAs in the San Francisco, California Area with a private shopper at the J.Crew located in the Westfield Mall.

The following details are also available at her blog post about this {fantastic} event (click here):
Who: JCrew Aficionados/as, of course (all levels welcome, hehe)
Where: Westfield Mall JCrew (preparty at Zazil)
When: Saturday, April 18. Preparty is at 7:00pm at Zazil in the mall, JCrew party at 8:30

The plan is to meet up, get a drink and a snack at Zazil (fuel for shopping!) and get to know each other, and then head on over to JCrew to be there at 8:30. You can always just show up at JC if you can't make it for the preparty. I would just love to know how many people will make it to either/both, so I can make reservations at Zazil, and let my personal shopper know how many ladies will be invading JCrew so they can have enough staff on hand. They can also provide refreshments/snacks if I request... right now I think we'll only need refreshments since we'll eat beforehand.

So if you are in the area and interested in attending, please RSVP by sending an email to: maugust (at) gmail (dot) com. Also, please RSVP before Wednesday, April 15th.

P.S. I have said this before, and I will say it again: I love love love hearing about these events! They are just too fabulous for words! :)

J.Crew's Third Sample Sale Starts Today! :)

Posted on 21:00 by gaurav kumar
ClothingLine will be hosting yet another J.Crew sample sale in NYC, taking place during this week of April 13th. For more information from , click here.

This sample sale will have lots of items for women from both the J.Crew, Crewcuts and Madewell line. Clothingline mentions that this event is "J.Crew's Biggest Sample Sale Ever". I am not sure if that means they have brought in new merchandise to sell or if this includes the merchandise they were unable to sell in the first two sample sales. In either case, I hope the prices are fantastic!

The location for the event is:
Clothingline | SSS Sample Sales
261 W 36th Street
(between 7th & 8th Ave)
2nd Floor
New York, NY 10018

MINI UPDATE: They announced that they will be "receiving a huge shipment of bags and scarves Wednesday morning." I hope there are some great deals! :)

Product Review: Mila Gown

Posted on 21:10 by gaurav kumar
Mila Gown
Item 11729
Regular: $495.00

A big "thanks!" goes to Anon at 11:02 AM (in this post) who shared with us her review of this gown:

I wanted to give a quick review of the fit of the Milla gown. I am 5'-4" and in JC dreses normally wear a 6R or 8R, and sometimes can wear an 8P or 10P. I ordered an 8R. The top was bigger through the bust than a typical JC dress.(I am 36B.)

The v-neck is deep but the top still provides decent coverage. I also would need to have the shoulders tailored because one or the other kept sliding off. Sizing down to a 6 probably could resolve the fit issues on top, but, for now, the skirt will be too snug through the hips in that size.

JC describes the skirt as being slightly a-line. Slightly is the key word. I thought the dress fit more snuggly through the hips than other "slightly a-line" styles I have purchased in the same size. Especially given the fit of the top.

That said, because the skirt only has a slight a-line, the length was still quite flattering on a shortie like me and I could have had the hem taken up without changing the look of the skirt.

The dress is a collection piece but it does not come with any fancy packaging, which did not bother me one bit. I dislike how much packaging needs to pitched/recylced everytime I receive an order. I prefer things to be packaged simply--just enough to protect the garment from damage.

"Thanks!" again to Anon at 11:02 AM (in this post) for sharing with us her great review!

I won't lie, I think this dress is g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s! However, it's one of those dresses that you can only wear once- because you definitely will get noticed wearing it.

What are your thoughts on the Mila Gown? Are you considering or already have purchased this dress? Have you seen this dress in person? If so, please share with us your reviews too! :)

J.Crew Sends Personal Touch With Orders Again :)

Posted on 21:05 by gaurav kumar
A big "thanks!" to Slastena (check out her great blog: About All and Nothing at All) who was kind enough to share with us J. Crew's latest marketing card (shown in the image above) that came with one of her recent internet orders. The card reads as follows:

Now more than ever, we remain obsessed with bringing you things that have lasting value - design, style, and quality. This is our commitment to you. We are always available at 24-7@jcrew.com.

Best, Mickey

I am impressed by the note's message. I know they had something similar awhile back (refer to this post). I still think it is a nice gesture by J.Crew and Mickey Drexler. :)

Have you received this marketing card in one of your recent orders? What are your thoughts/ opinions on the card? :)

J.Crew's Red Card {its' getting serious}

Posted on 13:02 by gaurav kumar
A big "thanks!" to so many of you, including Jeff, Anon at 10:22 PM (in this post), Sooner_girl, Melissa, Anon at 12:05 PM, Math Teacher & Ny0311 (in this post), as well as Anon at 1:04 PM (in this post), who shared your stories about recent purchases with your red card. In case you are a new to J.Crew, J.Crew sent out a promotional multiple-use card for 25% off all purchases recently (refer to this post).

Many Aficionadas and Aficionados have reported that as of lately, sales associates have asked to see some form of an ID when using the red card. They have also reported that associates have written the customer's name in permanent marker on the red card itself. Both measures are to ensure that the promotional card is being used, and only used, by the customer it was sent to.

Have you recently used your red card? If so, did you experience either scenario (associates asking for ID, writing in marker your name on the card)? What are your thoughts on this new measure?

Quick Poll: Do you think J.Crew should be enforcing the proper use of the red card?

J.Crew Brings Back Spring Sale

Posted on 03:08 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to many of you, including Lindsey B. (in this post), Crewbie (in this post), Anon at 12:41 AM & 3:36 AM (in this post), as well as Marietta, who shared with us the news that J.Crew has changed the final sale page to "introducing Spring Sale" (click here).

J.Crew also sent an email (as shown above) today letting us know the good news. ("Yey!" for getting the email!) :)

So does that mean there is no more "final sale"? I added a sale item to my cart and did not see the red "final sale" words, so maybe (just maybe), the final sale is over. :)

What are your thoughts on the Spring Sale? Happy to see "final sale" is gone? How long do you think until we see "final sale" return? ;)

An Aficionada Reviews Madewell's SoHo Store

Posted on 21:10 by gaurav kumar
A big "thanks!" to Lesley who was kind to share with us her review of J.Crew's sister store, Madewell, at the SoHo location. The following is her review:

The flagship Madewell store in SoHo is uniquely different than their other retail outlets. In February when I went to visit, there is a noticeable difference in its décor, I felt as if I were sneaking into one of the Madewell girl’s summer share at the shore. The store is very Rachel Ashwell “shabby chic”: white washed exposed brick walls, hardwood floors, shuttered windows and wooden shelving units. It was very reminiscent of a Baltimore or D.C. row house. Adding flourishes of color throughout the store were budding tree branches, books, and containers holding footwear, purses and scarves artfully placed throughout the store. Scarves were a major design feature: they were on the walls, in bowls and on the salespeople. It appears a carefully tied scarf is part of the Madewell uniform.

The denim bar: a wooden table with piles of jeans on it in every wash and fit was the main attraction for me. I was in search of a great pair of straight or skinny gray jeans (my personal current obsession). Initially I expected to wear a 31 or maybe a 30. I was surprised when the salesperson suggested I go down to a size 29 in the Rail Straight fit. She advised me that the jeans would stretch as I wore them and that the fit of the 29s was better in the waist in the back. She was right these jeans fit very nicely; they are straight without any taper. I also tried on the Skinny Low which is truly skinny; it has a low rise and tapers tightly to the ankle. This is an ideal fit for someone with a straight shape who wants that long lean look. I am curvy and athletic and they barely got over my calves.

Several winter items were on clearance: boots, grandpa sweaters, tunic sweaters, and scarves. Additionally, spring items were also on sale including tank tops, t-shirts, and sweaters. I noticed several similarities between J.Crew’s and Madewell’s spring collection: the cardigan sweater, belts, and sneakers. Madewell has several bright colored patent leather belts that are similar to the Patent Leather Skinny Belt and then a brown leather belt that is similar to the Roughed Out Leather Belt also. A canvas sneaker, the Bensimon (French canvas sneakers) is featured there just as J.Crew features the Jack Purcell distressed and broken in chino sneakers. There were flip flops in buckets which is similar to the way J.Crew store, stages their stores.

The Madewell flagship décor is fresh and down to earth; you can comfortably shop and easily envision how you would wear their clothes. Unfortunately online shopping is still delayed and hopefully will also be available soon. On my last visit to a Madewell store I was told they did not know when the online shopping would start.

Lesley also shared an image (shown on the left) & the following:
The Soft Satchel in pink which was featured in a February email
[refer here] by Madewell. I have not seen it in pink at my local store.

"Thanks!" again to Lesley for her amazing & wonderfully detailed review! I visited one of Madewell's stores in California and was not impressed. As a result, I didn't feel the need to visit another one. However, after reading Lesley's review, I am definitely going to check out the SoHo location when I visit NYC over the summer. :)

Have you visited the Madewell SoHo location? If so, what are your thoughts?

Product Review: Dressy Jersey Grecian V-neck Long Dress

Posted on 21:00 by gaurav kumar
Dressy Jersey Grecian V-neck Long Dress
Item 12613
Regular: $98.00

I just realized that I haven't written a product review in quite awhile! I hope the following is helpful. ;)

I love the long maxi dress look. However, I never could find a long dress with the perfect length- a dress that didn't hit my ankles or required me to wear heels. Well, I have finally found that dress- J.Crew's Dressy Jersey Grecian V-neck Long Dress (and the title really does say it all)!

First, the "more refined, sophisticated jersey viscos" is a wonderful material. It has a soft and smooth feel to it. As a jersey fabric, it can stretch when needed- which only increases the comfort of this dress. I have also found that when the fabric does stretch, there is no "see-through" of the material. (It could also be because I purchased the "Chocolate" version of this dress.) The fabric really does have a "dressy" feel to it- very similar to the Flowy Jersey Bateau Dress (refer here).

Second, the straps that are referred to as "twisted spaghetti straps" which reminds them "of a mythical goddess" is a nice touch. It does take some getting use to though. I have a tendency to try straigtening them out- even though I can't! ;)

Third, the length of the dress. The dress is described as "Falls to floor; 41 1/2" from natural waist". As someone who is 5'8", I found the dress to fall to the floor (if not slightly grazing it). I think this is because the weight of the jersey is a bit more substantial than a t-shirt, so it stretches the material to the ground. (Incidentally, the bottom of the dress is raw edge hem.)

The only drawback to this dress is the bunching on the back- and how the fabric falls from that point. Because of its positioning, the "empire waist" detail does not define my waist from the sides, even though it does from the front and back views. So what ends up happening from the side view is there is a straight a-line look from the bunching of the dress to my rear (as oppose to a more tailored, waist defining, look).

Lastly, this dress really is versatile. Because of the style and drape, it is very easy to "dress" this dress up (for a more sophisticated look), or to "dress" this dress down, (for a more casual look). It's like the little black dress! :)

What are your thoughts on the Dressy Jersey Grecian V-neck Long Dress? Are you considering or already have purchased this dress? Have you seen this dress in person? If so, please share with us your reviews too! :)

J.Crew Email: New cargo has arrived.

Posted on 16:46 by gaurav kumar
A big "thanks!" to Danielle who shared with us J.Crew's latest email.

J.Crew is letting us know about one of their new arrivals, the Ripstop Utility Pant (Item 14784; $69.50). Although Liya (the model in the image above) wears those cargo pants beautifully, I know I could never pull them off. Also, I am not sure if I like the whole "rolled-up" pant leg look. I remember sporting the look back in the late 80's and early 90's, and it did me no favors. ;)

Lastly, I didn't get this email. (So I really appreciate Danielle sharing it with us.) Oh J.Crew, why won't you send me emails anymore? ;)

What are your thoughts on the Ripstop Utility Pants? Have you tried them on? If so, please share with us your review. Also, what are your thoughts on the "rolling up the pant leg" look? Are you a fan of this style, or do you think it is a fashion faux pas?

J.Crew Wedding Trunk Show & More!

Posted on 21:15 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to Jean (in this post) who alerted us to J.Crew's Wedding Trunk Show. Over at J.Crew's wedding page (click here), they let us know about the wedding trunk show "featuring styles from our 2009 collection".

The location for this event will be at the Rockefeller J.Crew store located in NYC. The dates for this event are April 25th & April 26th (from 9-11AM). If you are in the area and interested in attending, just RSVP by April 22nd, by sending an email to J.Crew's bridal expert Ashley, at ashley@jcrew.com.

J.Crew's wedding page (click here) also shares with us the good news that some of their wedding gowns and bridesmaid dresses are now available to preview at select J.Crew locations. On the "Store Locator" page (click here), there is a new category in the key called "wedding collection preview". I think this is wonderful- both having the dresses available in select stores and also indicating which stores they are in. Now only if they could create one for which stores have shoes... ;)

Will you be attending J.Crew's Wedding Trunk Show? If so, please let us know! Also, if you could add a category under the "Store Locator" key, what would it be and why? (My vote is for shoes, so I can know which stores are carrying them). ;)

J.Crew Email: Up to 30% off select women's sweaters. Online and in-stores.

Posted on 21:05 by gaurav kumar
"Thanks!" to many of you, including Dina, who shared with us an email J.Crew sent last Friday about their latest promotion.

J.Crew is offering up to 30% off select sweaters. This offer is available online (click here) and in-stores.

Speaking of sweaters, I recently bought the Cotton-Cashmere Bouquet Cardigan in Putty (Item 12728; was $78.00; now $59.50 online, but $49.99 in stores) and I love it! The "trio of cotton lawn flowers" is such a lovely detail. It makes this otherwise simple cardigan, a little bit more interesting. The only downside to the cardigan... it's "hand wash" only.

Are you planning to take advantage of this promotion? What sweaters have you recently purchased that you would recommend to buy or recommend staying away from? ;)

J.Crew Updates Cancellation Email {finally!}

Posted on 21:00 by gaurav kumar
I finally found something yesterday in my size and available. So I ordered it immediately. Unfortunately, I got an email later in the day telling me the {sad} news that it was canceled. The new email (as shown above) with the subject line "News about your J.Crew order", recognizes that there was not enough merchandise available. They also recognize this was their error and apologize for the inconvenience.

The previous standard email that was sent (also shown above here) had the subject line of "Important news about your J.Crew order...". The original email made it sound like the customer requested the item to be canceled, even if that was not the case. This of course was frustrating to read (and usually was followed by a phone call to customer service to let them know there wasn't a cancellation request from the customer).

Although I am disappointed about not being able to purchase the item, I am happy to see that J.Crew finally changed the wording on the email they send to notify customers.

What are your thoughts on the new cancellation email? Are you satisfied with the message? What else do you think J.Crew could include (if anything)?

Last Day For 30% Off Final Sale {sniffle}

Posted on 21:05 by gaurav kumar
Today is the last day J.Crew is offering 30% off final sale items with promo code EXTRA30.

I *so* wanted to take advantage of this offer. Except it seemed there was nothing left in the sale section in my size. There were a few instances that I found an item or two, but by the time I "checked out" the items had disappeared from my shopping cart. Despite the natural sadness of not getting those items, I am not upset.

I am actually thrilled to see this promotion working so well to move J.Crew's sale inventory. Why? Because I hope that J.Crew will offer similar promotions like this one, when they are in need to liquidate merchandise. I much prefer this sale as oppose to having sample sales in NYC or random warehouse sales across the country (although the warehouse sales are pretty cool!) ;)

Are you planning to take advantage of this offer today? If so, which items do you plan to get (if you can get them)? ;) Do you prefer this kind of sale over the sample/ warehouse sales?

J.Crew Does Yo-Yo Tricks {kind of}

DUNCAN® Crossed Flag Yo-Yo
with box and tricks

Item 18408
Regular: $14.50

"Thanks!" to Julie for letting us know about one of J.Crew's most unlikely product offerings... a Duncan 1955-style Yo-Yo!

I have to say, that I love that the "classic hardwood-maple tournament yo-yo" also known as the "Crossed Flag—it's a Duncan original" comes with a book of tricks.

The only thing is I am not really sure why J.Crew is offering this product. I guess it goes right up there with the Max Blagg's chewed pencils, offered for $25 each at the Tribeca men's store (refer to this post). ;)

What are your thoughts on J.Crew offering the Duncan Yo-Yo? Do you think it is a good idea for J.Crew to occasionally offer other firm's products?

Michelle Obama Shines With J.Crew

Posted on 09:49 by gaurav kumar
A big "thanks!" to many of you, including Penny, Anon at 10:17 AM, GoldCoastGal, & krista.alana (in this post), as well as Anon at 11:50 AM (in this post), Leaderboys, Tweedybird, Jennifer, Adrienne, Jackie from DC, & JBinDC, who not only let us know that several J.Crew items were recently spotted on Michelle Obama, but also provided several links to articles featuring the news, including the Mrs. O website (click here). :)

Michelle Obama sparkles in J.Crew
By Booth Moore
April 1, 2009

Against a backdrop of protests and economic angst, the fashion parade continues in London at the G-20 summit. Tuesday, First Lady Michelle Obama took off for London wearing an ivory Thakoon coat, then changed clothes on the plane before arriving in a chartreuse Jason Wu dress (love that, someone who travels in style).

By this morning, for a breakfast with Prime Minister Gordon Brown's wife, Sarah, and a visit to a cancer center, Obama had jettisoned the high-priced designer labels in favor of more fiscally conscious J.Crew -- a cheery, crystal-studded ivory cardigan and mint green jacquard pencil skirt.

The cardigan, by the way, is already sold out. (You can find similar beaded styles from the 1950s at almost any vintage store.) Next up, tea and cucumber sandwiches with the queen. Don't bet on seeing a hat, but maybe a sleeveless dress.

You just know that J.Crew's Mickey Drexler and Jenna Lyons are l-o-v-i-n-g the additional press coverage from Michelle Obama wearing both the Crystal Constellation Cardigan (Item 12280; $298.00) and the Dazzling-dots pencil skirt (Item 11804; $158.00)! ;)

As for First Lady Michelle Obama's outfit... it is an outfit that I would have never put together and it's definitely an outfit I could never pull off. With that said, I think she looks great! She looks both casual and chic. And the sparkles on that cardigan- absolutely pretty!

What are your thoughts on the different J.Crew items? Are you a fan of the sparkly cardigan? Do you like or dislike how First Lady Michelle Obama styled the pieces? :)
